On Thursday 10 May the final round of the speaker reader competition was held at FHPS. Each child had to select a prose passage, memorize it and then present it to the judges and a hall full of parents. Our judges were all ex-students who had studied drama at high school and pursued after they matriculated. They remarked on the confidence & ability of all the children. The children performed beautifully and impressed everyone! Their chosen extracts ranged from the works of Roald Dahl to ‘Little Women’ and ‘A Tail of Emily Windsnap’.

<![CDATA[Grade 1 Grandparents Tea Party]]>Sun, 20 May 2012 15:47:33 +0200http://www.fishhoekprimary.co.za/2/post/2012/05/grade-1-grandparents-tea-party.htmlOn Friday the 11 May the grade 1’s hosted a tea party for their grannies and grandpa’s. The grade 1’s entertained them with singing and Miss Connan’s violinists played. The Foundation Phase choir under the leadership of Mrs Van Blerk sang beautifully too.

We had over 170 grandparents attend this year with the oldest being 98 and youngest 45. To fit in with the theme of mad hatters our guests wore magnificent creations. We held a whacky hat competition which the grade ones loved!

Thank you to all parents who supplied eats, set tables and served tea. To our special music staff, Grade one teachers and especially Grade One pupils. ♥

We walked around in socks because he hates noise! We were treated to hot chocolate with marshmallows. Mmmmm! We did lots of handwriting and handiwork which made us happy!

<![CDATA[WP Schools Chess League]]>Mon, 14 May 2012 13:45:15 +0200http://www.fishhoekprimary.co.za/2/post/2012/05/wp-schools-chess-league.htmlOur teams are in the thick of the WP Schools Chess League fight. We played against Simon vd Stel & Reddam. The league results so far:Sullivan Pri 14 FHPS 4 Players scoring:Kanyisa Mayala,Keira Moran,Jaco Prinsloo,Adam Challens,Julia van Wyk. Simon v d Stel 4 1/2 FHPS 1 1/2: Players scoring:Wesley Windell,Nicholas Job Reddam House: 11 FHPS 1 Players scoring: Jared Peiser. Although we have lost all three tournaments so far, it really wasn't a case of "roll-over-rover". Our players had very intensive games and gave their opponents some tough opposition, also realising that they are up against provincial players in many games. We understand that this is our first year in the League and we are learning a lot. Meanwhile FHPS chess players are playing their hearts out and enjoying it.
Well done!]]>
<![CDATA[The Silver Oaks have been planted with a Salute!]]>Mon, 14 May 2012 12:23:04 +0200http://www.fishhoekprimary.co.za/2/post/2012/05/the-silver-oaks-have-been-planted-with-a-salute.htmlToday, Friday-06h38....

Out of the approximately 400 parents, we had 4 join us in solidarity ( 1%) to plant 20 silver oak trees, with excited children buzzing around, the sun yet to rise, 18 holes where dug, objective to plant all trees before 11h00, square holes where sunk up to 1 meter, and loaded with anaerobic bacteria fermented food waste, lined with recycled cardboard, composted with 1 ton of coarse compost generously donated by Harry Goemans, sprinkled with rock dusk, drizzled with kelp, donated by kelpak, and the remaining soil mixed with vermicast-product of reused organic waste...all trees where well watered and planted by 11h00.

The Hells Angels regard themselves as the 1%s, despite being regarded as a notorious motorcycle gang, the Hells Angels prove that 1% is a force on its own.

Green Guerrillas salute the 1% of parents that got dirty and sweaty with us-SALUTE!

To the children that infectiously climbed in and started digging, moving and getting involved-You rock!

Watch this space for our next trick...

The General

<![CDATA[Hockey vs Hillcrest Christian School from Durban ]]>Thu, 10 May 2012 10:18:51 +0200http://www.fishhoekprimary.co.za/2/post/2012/05/hockey-vs-hillcrest-christian-school-from-durban.htmlOn Thursday 26 April the U13 hockey girls and boys were extremely excited to play against a touring side from Durban. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't playing game, and thunder and lightening delayed play and a decision ws made to go up to the High School indoor hall - a first for our children. Four games were played as it is only 6 a-side, and whilst our teams were unsuccessful in their efforts to win in this extremely fast-paced form of hockey, their enthusiasm and fighting spirit were great. Afterwards all teams were treated to boerewors rolls and cake. Thank you to the cooks, Mr and Mrs Scott and Mr Steel as well as Mr Denne for his organisation.

<![CDATA[Grade 6 visits the Centre for Conservation]]>Wed, 09 May 2012 09:30:04 +0200http://www.fishhoekprimary.co.za/2/post/2012/05/grade-6-visits-the-centre-for-conservation.html
All four grade six classes visited the Centre for Conservation Education recently. They learnt more about recyling and waste management.
This is what some of them had to say:
"I learnt that you should tell people about recycling and managing their waste". (Thulani)
"I learnt that if you recycle you are doing the world a huge favour". (Sean)
"I learnt that we must take care of our planet and reduce, re-use and recycle". (Caitlin)
"I learnt that you must first re-use, and then recycle, because the things you throw away can be very useful". (Deirdre)
