The future of our nation depends on our ability to create-and to be creative. During the coming decades our most important national resources will be human resources. If our nation is to continue to meet the challenges of the future, today's schools need to develop creative leaders. (Performing together: The Arts and Education, 1985)
Drama at Fish Hoek Primary is alive and well. The hundred plus children aged between 10 and 13 meet every Friday afternoon for 2 hours of fun, song and dance! Every year we participate in the Annual Sun Flower Concert run by Jono Holgate and the members of the Valley Christian Church to raise money to help those suffering from cancer. Our children sing and dance their way to a packed hall through many numbers which have included ‘Fame’, Michael Jacksons ‘Black & White’, a medley from Peter Pan, and many South African songs including ‘Daar kom die Alibama’, ‘Klop Klop’ and ‘Shosholoza’. The children excel themselves and the show is always a wonderful success. Then in September the whole show is performed again at the V&A Waterfront. It is a wonderful experience. At the beginning of the fourth term we star our annual musical. We have done ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Annie’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Oliver’, ‘Joseph’, and ‘Grease’ to name a few. We always stage two full casts of main characters in order to try to give as many children as possible a chance to perform. The children always rise to the occasion and perform beautifully. At the end of the year our drama group transform into ‘Singing Santas’ and charm the crowds in the Arcade in Fish Hoek Main Road. We also visit Nerina Gardens, Noordhoek Manor and Carlisle Lodge to bring Christmas Cheer to the elderly residents. In 2010 while the children were performing they caught the ear of Gabi Roux who asked for six of them to come to his studio in Cape Town to sing on a CD he was busy producing. Daniel van Blerk, Georgia Croeser, Caitlin Lombard, Maria Kasfikis, Tali Sulcas and Ulfah Davids had a wonderful morning at his studios. At present we are still the holders of the trophy of the Waterfront schools showcase. We also have had various of our children, Kirsty Du Plessis and Georgia Croeser performing in ‘Annie’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at the Artscape. As always, many thanks must go to Fanie Zondagh, Susan Connan in the music department and Sarah Cookney in the choreography department for all they do for our children. Thanks too to Colleen Lombard for all her help and encouragement and the moms who tirelessly pack costumes and sew for us. Our main aim is always to build the confidence of the children and to allow them to develop their talents and foster their love of theatre. Teacher in Charge: Mrs Gail Beagley |
