Grade 5Grade 5 is an exciting part of the Intermediate Phase. The children have the basics and are ready to master new skills.
The year begins with a three-day SOS camp (Near Villiersdorp). Here the children interact with the farm animals and others including Max the Alpacca and Puiker the Porcupine. The children go on a night hike, swim, do obstacle courses, try canoeing, work with GPS equipment and attempt the climbing wall – all in all, an action packed three days. During the year we cover a wide range of topics which include: - Animal classification, plant and flowers in Science (not forgetting the experiments) - The San, Khoi, early South Africa, Ancient civilisation (China and Egypt) in History, mapping skills, continents, SA Provinces, weather and climate in Geography. - The introduction of long multiplication and long division not forgetting patterns, shapes, fractions and decimals makes for as challenging Maths year. The year is filled with enjoyable educational activities including a visit to the Cape Town Museum, the Castle, and the MTN Science Centre. Children get to try out their entrepreneurial skills at Grade 5 Market Day. Wow – what a fun filled year!
