Intermediate Phase

GRADES 4 - 6

GRADE 4

Grade 4 is the beginning of the Intermediate Phase and therefore many new learning areas and skills are taught. We concentrate on learning about ourselves and our surroundings. Our topics include our personal timeline, family history and the history of Fish Hoek. An enjoyable outing around Fish Hoek helps the learners to identify some of our unique old buildings. Another highlight is a visit to the Centre for Conservation Education where the learners’ role play a day in the life of a Victorian child. There is a great excitement in Grade 4 when a learner earns their first merit badge, which is handed out at assembly. The Grade 4 learners are happy, enthusiastic group of learners who enjoy every aspect of a wonderful school.

GRADE 5

Grade 5 is an exciting part of the Intermediate Phase. The children have the basics and are ready to master new skills.

The year begins with a three-day SOS camp (Near Villiersdorp). Here the children interact with the farm animals and others including Max the Alpacca and Puiker the Porcupine. The children go on a night hike, swim, do obstacle courses, try canoeing, work with GPS equipment and attempt the climbing wall – all in all, an action packed three days.

During the year we cover a wide range of topics which include:

- Animal classification, plant and flowers in Science (not forgetting the experiments)

- The San, Khoi, early South Africa, Ancient civilisation (China and Egypt) in History, mapping skills, continents, SA Provinces, weather and climate in Geography.

- The introduction of long multiplication and long division not forgetting patterns, shapes, fractions and decimals makes for as challenging Maths year.

The year is filled with enjoyable educational activities including a visit to the Cape Town Museum, the Castle, and the MTN Science Centre. Children get to try out their entrepreneurial skills at Grade 5 Market Day.

Wow – what a fun filled year!

GRADE 6

In Grade 6, during the first term we head off to Rocklands Camp in Murdoch Valley. We have an absolute ball learning many new life skills and making new and close friends with our classmates. It is also a time for our teachers to get to know us better. This is definitely one of the main highlights of our Grade 6 year.

The Teen Talk is another important program that we all look forward to. This is done at the end of the 3rd term. We learn many things from how our bodies change during puberty to drugs and AIDS. This is important for us to do so that we all know the correct facts.

Grade 6 is a very important year in a child's primary school career. It is the end of the Intermediate Phase and we (teachers and children) work very hard to ensure that all children are ready to move into the Senior Phase, which begins in Grade 7.

Our aim is to make the final year in the Intermediate Phase a memorable experience. Therefore, we encourage them to aim for 'personal bests' in their academic, cultural and social commitments.
